Buttermilk Biscuits
2 cups all purpose flour
5 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons sugar
1/4 cup shortening or butter
1-1/4 cups buttermilk
Preheat oven to 450
Have buttermilk at room temp. Mix all dry ingredients in medium bowl. Cut in shortening or butter. Stir in buttermilk. Roll out on floured surface until 1/2" thick. Cut with desired size biscuit cutter. Bake until golden about 10-12 minutes.
I have found with this recipe that you will add a little flour after everything is mixed to get a good dough. Keep the biscuits touching when you load them in the pan to bake. You can let sit for 10-15 minutes to rise if you wish.
Serve with anything that deserves a very flavorful biscuit, which is pretty much everything! This is a great recipe to use your left over buttermilk from the onion ring recipe.
These are really good with butter and jamb for dessert. We also pour sorghum over these for a nice finish.
